A Yoga Class to Open All Your Senses

When I first heard of Spa Yoga, the feeling that overcame me was similar to whenever I’d hear the words “Bed and Breakfast”, or “Bread and Butter”, or even “Bingewatching and Netflix.” It’s like saying “yes, please!” to 2 amazing things at once.

“It’s relaxing, restorative,” muses Betty Riaz, founder of Spa Yoga. “It’s mindful. It’s blissful.”

Betty believes that life’s imperfections are a catalyst for change, and that by seeking out and embracing the beauty of everyday chaos, we can challenge our mindfulness practices on and off the mat. Based out of Massachusetts, Betty has proved that in our modern-day, over-saturated health + fitness world, you can still blow people away with something new. I asked her what inspired her to create Spa Yoga.

“I was at a meditation retreat, which led me on a practice to seek mindfulness,” she said. “I realized that there was a need for more mindful movement classes.”

So what exactly sets this class apart?

I couldn’t tell ya… exactly. When Betty came out to One Fire a couple of years ago, I was running around behind-the-scenes, putting out the proverbial fires (no put intended). But I do remember stopping in my tracks when I caught a peek of their class from the hallway: there were musicians, two assistants going around helping people settle into their poses and offering light massage work, and there was Betty, who was leading the class amidst the smells of essential oils. I even remember someone saying they got some chocolate at the end.

“There’s the teacher, and the assistants who aid in the sensation of opening all of our senses,” Betty explained.

And to that, all I can say is, you had me at hello.

And if we had you at hello as well, we hope you join us at this years fest, where Betty will be offering Spa Yoga.
